As a result of the fact that Antartica is not legally owned or governed by any one nation, there is no established centralized lawmaking authority on the continent. Instead, in the year 1952, the Antarctic Treaty was ratified by a group of nations that already had researchers stationed in and around Antarctica and were carrying out scientific investigations.
