- Transcripts don’t look exactly like the forms you filed for your taxes. Instead, they just contain direct information. There are five types of transcripts you can request from the IRS: Tax Return Transcript: Shows most line items from your original tax return, but it doesn’t show changes after you filed your original return.

The tax return is a form filed with the IRS that is used to determine an individual’s tax liability. Forms include the 1040, the 1040A, or the 1040EZ. The tax return transcript is a document tax filers can request from the IRS that includes the information submitted on the tax return.
Is a transcript the same as a w2?
A transcript will include information reported on Form W-2, Form 1099 series, Form 1098 series, and Form 5498 series. Can I use tax transcript instead of W-2?
Yes, you can use a Wage and Income transcript in place of a W2 when preparing and filing back taxes. A Wage and Income transcript will not provide you state income tax withholding information.
Is W-2 and 1040 the same thing?
The W-2 is the form your employer sends to you each January reporting your wages & withholding. The form 1040 is your tax return you file.
